On Tuesday, we drove to Samaná where someone had payed for us to stay at a resort for the last couple days. On the way to Samaná, we stopped at the first evangelical church in the Dominican Republic and learned about the huge sacrifices people made to establish this Christian church. A highlight there was singing some of the songs we'd been singing the whole time. The acoustics in the church were amazing. We could have stayed there singing for hours.
At the resort, we swam, ate good food, and had our last few studies.
Jessica and Jason did their Cat in the Hat duo the last night. It was a huge hit.
At the beach, Janelle stepped on a sea urchin. Several of us performed 90 minute surgery with what tools we had to remove the spines.
The time finally arrived when we had to say goodbye. We may look happy in the picture, but we're still getting over it.
We flew to Miami where we barely (I mean BARELY) made our flight to Dulles.
We did arrive home safe and sound. No lost people, nothing stollen, full of enough good teaching to work on applying the rest of our lives, stretched by new and challenging experiences, and blessed with new friends and perspective on life. Jessica and another girl from the team came down with Chikungunya after we got home. Chikungunya is a mosquito-born virus that has affected 20% of the Dominican work force. Jessica had a fever, swelling and rash all over her body, and joint pain for several days, but she is much better now. We're thankful that they didn't get sick until we got home!
