We flew into Santo Domingo late at night on July 23rd. The first thing I noticed was the humidity. I could feel it between my fingers. Our family and the Raimundos shared one apartment, and the rest of the team of 19 Americans stayed at the nearby home of a local pastor. We went to bed in the wee hours of the morning. Some of us girls shared the bedroom without air conditioning. It was around 95 degrees all the time. We had fans and made the most of the experience of life that much closer to the equator.
That afternoon, we drove to a small village outside of Santo Domingo called Villa Altagracia where we shared a Bible lesson and songs with about 70 children and spent a little bit of time with them. Jeannine used her art skills to draw pictures of the Bible story for the lesson. It was very striking to see the lifestyle of the people there. We all wanted to go back, but we didn't have the time.
The next two days we focused on painting part of a church building. Some of us went to the grocery store with the head of logistics for the chain in the whole country.
On Sunday we visited two churches in Santo Domingo. We had to have both services translated into English for us.
